Reflections 2012 -2013
Theme: "The Magic of a Moment"
Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The 2012-2013 theme will be "The Magic of a Moment".

A Great Learning Experience
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.

The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.

Student Guidelines
Students must adhere to the General Student Participation Rules as well as the rules for their specific arts area.  Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted.

Grade Divisions
Students may enter the Reflections Program in the appropriate division for their grade. The divisions are as follows:
         Primary: Kindergarten-grade 3
         Intermediate: grades 4-6

Arts Areas
Students may submit works in any of six arts areas:
        Dance choreography
        Film production
        Literature
        Musical composition
        Photography
        Visual arts

Originality
Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student's work. Because the program is designed to encourage and recognize each student's individual creativity, help from an adult or collaboration with other students is not allowed. Only one student may be recognized as the award recipient for each entry. Other individuals may appear in or perform a student's work, but the work itself, the dance choreography or film production (including screenplay, camerawork, and directing) or musical composition (including written score and any lyrics), etc. must be the creative product of one student only. (See the specific arts area rules for details.)
Use of copyrighted material (other than recorded music in dance choreography and film production entries) is prohibited.
Plagiarism is defined as taking and using another person's ideas, writings, or inventions as one's own. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified and returned to the students.

Deadlines  :  Students must submit all works by Monday, November 26, 2012.
PTA Reflections Box will be located in the library for students to submit entries. All entries MUST have entry form filled out with parent signature.  Click here to access the Entry Form.

Judging
Entries are judged at the local level and the top entries are forwarded to the next level of judging (council, district/region, or state). All national entries are judged on artistic merit, creativity, mastery of the medium, and interpretation of the theme. Mastery of the medium in the context of the national Reflections Program pertains to the level of skill the student demonstrates in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area. However, a well-developed concept is more important than technique. Entries will be judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the theme.

The Reflections Program makes no restriction on content or subject in artwork. Students who are submitting entries need to meet school and/or local and state PTA standards.

Each PTA determines its own judges for the program. Under no condition may parents or students contact the judges to dispute the status of an entry. All decisions of judges are final.

Awards:All participants will be announced at a general assembly sometime in December.

A Word to Parents:
As with any student activity, parent involvement and support are very important. But parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter in the Reflections Program. By producing their own literature, musical compositions, photographs, films, dance routines, and visual artwork, children learn about the arts and, more importantly, they learn about themselves. Students should simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone.

PTA's Reflections Program helps parents encourage the creativity and continuous self-discovery process of their children. Supporting the Reflections Program is one way you can support the arts in your home, school, and community.

We have a fun opportunity to earn money for our school!  Just by going to the Corn Maze, we will earn $1.00 for every person through the gate.  (Actually, our school will earn 50 cents because the Region PTA was gracious enough to let us share the night with them.)

We need to provide 6 volunteers to help out at the corn maze.  Every volunteer gets a free t-shirt from the people at the maze!  What could be better than "Free Stuff!  Comment below if you are interested in volunteering.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, September 5th from 6:00-7:00pm.

Ms. Dye will host a very short welcome back meeting in the gym and then parents will be free to visit the classrooms.

Plan on bringing your checkbook so you can join Gate City PTA (click here to learn the details and benefits of PTA membership).  You can also pre-order your newly designed Gate City T-shirts (click here to see the new design).  Spirit Day will be every Friday, so your kids will definitely need a red school shirt!

There will also be the opportunity to sign up to volunteer in your child's classroom or on one of our great PTA Committees.  We are still looking for a few Committee Chairs (a free t-shirt for yourself!) and help is always needed on the committees! You can do as much or as little as you are able.  You don't have to be a PTA member to volunteer, nor do you have to volunteer if you are a member.  Please just come out and support our great faculty and school!
